Virgin rhino becomes a stowaway on Dublin ferry

Virgin Trains confirms that its baby Rhino - now officially named Minimus Rhinoceros after a staff competition was held to name him, with the winning name being chosen by Visit Chester and Cheshire - has been caught attempting to leave the mainland.

Minimus was first spotted yesterday morning in North Wales at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch railway station where he was encouraging representatives from Anglesey Tourism Association to take his photograph.

Later in the day, Virgin Trains’ managers were called to the Port of Holyhead, where Minimus had tried to stowaway onboard a Stena ferry. Wearing a captain's hat he had taken up residence on the ship's bridge. He was removed from the ferry and taken back to Crewe station, where he normally 'works' in the ticket office.

The latest escape comes just days before the full-size Rhinos, which have been seen around Chester - and at London's Euston railway station - this summer are auctioned off for charity.

Virgin Trains’ Station Manager for Crewe and North Wales Sam Dixon said: "We gave Minimus his own travel pass, but didn't expect him to just take off without notice. He told me that he had seen lots of passengers buying Rail Sail tickets to Dublin via Holyhead and wanted to see what the ferry looked like.

"Minimus is now back at Crewe and we are looking at how we can use him to raise money for Virgin Trains' chosen charity - CLIC Sargent."

Virgin Trains operates intercity train services between London Euston, Milton Keynes, Crewe and Chester to Holyhead.

· Over 10 weeks from July 5 to September 12 2010, 62 incredible rhino sculptures became a trail through the city of Chester – and at London Euston station with thousands of people following the stampede. After a truly incredible summer, the Rhinos have finally left the historic streets of Chester and beyond. Gone but certainly not forgotten, the Rhinos are now preparing to take to take their place in the limelight for the Rhino Mania Auction on Tuesday 5th October. 53 beautiful rhino works of art will go under the hammer of Bargain Hunt's John Crane at Chester Racecourse to raise invaluable funds for charity. 75% of the net proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to the Black Rhino Field Conservation Project in Kenya and Tanzania managed by Chester Zoo and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, a Chester based charity. The other 25% helps support and run the event. For a full listing of Rhinos being auctioned and bidding details visit http://www.rhinomania.co.uk/

Alstom and Virgin Trains launch co-branded "Alstom Pendolino", a train with a mission

Alstom and Virgin Trains have unveiled a new look for one of the fifty-two high-speed tilting Pendolino trains serving the West Coast Main Line.

The train, renamed “Alstom Pendolino” by Virgin Trains CEO Tony Collins during a ceremony at Euston station, London, now displays a specially designed Alstom branding alongside that of Virgin. This is in recognition of the successful partnership between the two companies, established in 1999, which underpins the delivery of a world class intercity service. The fleet, built and maintained by Alstom, is one of the most intensively used in the world, with 47 trains in service every day, covering over 16.5 million miles per year.

Alstom has chosen the newly branded train for a special mission in a further illustration of cross-industry partnership aimed at bringing benefits to passengers. “Alstom Pendolino” will be used to improve system reliability thanks to an initiative between Alstom, Virgin Trains and Network Rail. The train is fitted with pantograph and track monitoring equipment which will provide valuable data to support preventative maintenance of the track and overhead line. In addition the set will be used to trial potential train modifications that can be used to improve fleet reliability.

Tony Collins, CEO Virgin Trains, said: "Our customer service success at Virgin Trains is heavily dependent on the relationship with our key partners. Alstom has consistently gone beyond the call of duty to help us achieve the performance that has attracted record customer numbers and customer satisfaction scores. We are grateful for that support and partnership."

Paul Robinson, Managing Director, Alstom Transport UK & Ireland added: “ It is an honour to place the Alstom brand alongside that of Virgin and so emphasize our daily contribution to the running of the flagship Pendolino fleet. Furthermore, “Alstom Pendolino” will be instrumental in helping train maintainer, operator and infrastructure provider target further improvements on the West Coast Main Line”.

Jo Kaye, Route Director for Network Rail said: “This is just one demonstration of how we, as an industry, are developing new technologies to deliver an efficient and highly reliable railway. The track data this train will provide will prove invaluable in helping us to detect potential faults as they develop so that we can carry out preventative maintenance and push performance on the West Coast to ever higher levels.”

Notes for editors Alstom carries out a full service regime on the Pendolino fleet from five Traincare Centres in London Wolverhampton, Liverpool , Manchester and Glasgow and a fleet control centre in Birmingham

As of 16 Sept 2010 the 52-strong Pendolino fleet has covered almost 90 million miles in service

Each train averages 1100 miles per day in service

In the 12 months to end August 2010 the fleet returned 62.7GWh of electricity to the grid, the equivalent of powering 15 600 homes for a year*

Latest rail industry timekeeping figures show Virgin Trains as most improved operator

Punctuality of Virgin Trains services over the past year is the most improved across the rail industry according to latest figures announced today by Network Rail.

During the period from 25 July to 21 August this year 93.0% of trains arrived on time across the 1,190 km network that stretches from London to Glasgow and takes in Birmingham, North Wales, Manchester and Liverpool. This compares with 89.6% of trains arriving on time during the equivalent period last year.

Tony Collins, Virgin Trains CEO, said. "The improvement over the last year has been extremely impressive. The performance of Network Rail and our other partners, as well as our staff, has brought a significant shift in the way customers can plan their journeys with confidence."Our strong growth and improved satisfaction figures of the last year are a direct result of this performance and it is crucial we all maintain consistently reliable punctuality as we approach the autumn."

Virgin Trains operates 330 trains each weekday with annual ridership currently running at 26 million.

Driver names a train to mark Virgin’s investment of more than £2 million at Polmadie

Passengers will benefit from further improvements in the performance of rail services on the West Coast Main Line thanks to investment of more than £2 million by Virgin Trains in Glasgow.

Virgin’s Super Voyager tilting trains that link Glasgow and Edinburgh with Birmingham will be serviced at a new facility that was declared open today at Polmadie on the south side of the city.

Joe Porter, a train driver whose railway career at Polmadie stretches back to the last days of steam, inaugurated the new servicing unit by naming a Super Voyager train “Polmadie Depot”.

He was chosen by his colleagues who had asked Virgin Trains to mark the importance of Polmadie by naming a train.

Chris Gibb, Chief Operating Officer of Virgin Trains, who invited Joe to unveil the new cast metal nameplate on the side of the 125mph train, said: “Most days now, our trains are more than 90 per cent on time and the investment at Polmadie in a dedicated facility to service Super Voyager trains will help build on that improved performance.”

Chris Gibb praised the hard work of the people of Virgin Trains, Network Rail and the train suppliers Alstom and Bombardier for boosting reliability to the extent that last month’s Public Performance Measure* (PPM) for Virgin Trains was 93 per cent.

Among work carried out by the 118 people employed by Alstom Transport at the Glasgow traincare centre is overnight servicing for the 11 trains that Virgin operates from Scotland first thing each morning.

As well as the Virgin Trains’ drivers’ depot, the Glasgow site includes one of five traincare centres on the West Coast Main Line managed by Alstom Transport, builders and maintainers of the Pendolino electric train fleet operated by Virgin Trains to and from London Euston. In Glasgow, Alstom Transport teams also service Super Voyager diesel trains, which were built by Bombardier, whose main maintenance site for these trains is at Central Rivers in the East Midlands.

The development of the new Glasgow facility dedicated to diesel train maintenance maximises the opportunities for work on both types of train, by allowing most of the traincare centre at Polmadie to be devoted to Pendolinos while the new premises handle Super Voyagers.

The bespoke development for Super Voyagers increases the scope for preventive maintenance, diesel engine health checks and tilt mechanism repairs on these trains. More can be done in Glasgow without the need for the trains to go onto depots elsewhere.Roy Sullivan, Alstom Transport Mainline Operations Director, said: "Glasgow is very important to us. The depot plays a crucial role in our train maintenance strategy, making sure that Virgin and other train operators can deliver reliable services for their passengers.”

Bombardier's Vice-President Services for the UK, Paul Roberts said: "This is an important development for our Super Voyager trains, demonstrating our dedication to and close working relationship with Virgin Trains, ensuring a high quality service for passengers travelling from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Birmingham and also between North Wales, Chester and London."

Chris Gibb said: “The 52 Virgin Trains drivers who are based at Polmadie are very proud of the depot’s history, dating back to 1875 when the Caledonian Railway opened an engine shed there. We were delighted to accept their suggestion to name a train and that Joe Porter would be the ideal candidate for today’s event.”

“Joe began his railway career at Polmadie as a teenager more than 43 years ago when he cleaned steam locomotives. He started to shovel coal on them as a fireman just weeks before the last of these engines were replaced,” Chris Gibb added.

“In his time here, Joe has seen many changes from the end of steam to the arrival of diesels, followed by electric trains. He drove those and also the ill-fated Advanced Passenger Train. He now drives Virgin’s highly successful tilting trains, the Pendolinos and Super Voyagers.”

*PPM for long-distance train operators is the percentage of scheduled trains that run and reach their destination on time or less than ten minutes late. The Virgin Trains figure of 93 per cent was for the most recent reporting period, 4 weeks to 21 August.

More car parking spaces at Warrington Bank Quay station

A new car park for rail passengers using Warrington Bank Quay station opens on 4 September. Located a short walk from the station in Slutchers Lane, the car park, (car park 2), has 200 spaces.

As well as the new car park, by 20 September Network Rail and Virgin Trains will have upgraded the facilities at the existing car park (car park 1) located adjacent to the station entrance. To allow the upgrade of car park 1 to take place it will be temporarily closed from 4 September. Once the upgrade work is completed the two car parks will provide a combined 280 spaces at the station.

For the safety and security of users, the new car park also has CCTV throughout with 24 hour recording. The car parks will have a new ‘Pay on Foot’ payment system, where a ticket is issued on entry to the car park. Payment must then be made at the machine prior to customers returning to their car to leave the car park.

A new charging structure is also being introduced, offering substantial discounts over the full day rate for off peak and weekend users.

From 4 September all-day parking in Car Park 2 at Warrington Bank Quay will cost £6, and is the first increase in parking charges at the station for over five years. New reduced off-peak parking charges will be available after 10:00 on weekdays coasting £4 and on Saturdays and Sundays costing £2 a day. Monthly, quarterly, six monthly and annual season tickets are also available for regular peak time users, which have also been increased to align them pro-rata with the new daily rate. The new monthly ticket costs £74 effectively offering daily parking, based on 20 days use a month at just £3.70 a day. The annual ticket is priced at £735 and if used for just 45 weeks a year offers an equivalent daily parking rate of just £3.27 a day.

From 20 September all-day parking in Car Park 1 at Warrington Bank Quay will cost £8. New reduced off-peak parking charges will be available on Saturdays and Sundays costing £6 a day. Monthly, quarterly, six monthly and annual season tickets are also available for regular peak time users, which have also been increased to align them pro-rata with the new daily rate. The new monthly ticket costs £98 effectively offering daily parking, based on 20 days use a month at just £4.90 a day. The annual ticket is priced at £980 and if used for just 45 weeks a year offers an equivalent daily parking rate of just £4.36 a day.

Virgin Trains Station Manager at Warrington Bank Quay Keith Millard said: “The limited parking facilities at Warrington Bank Quay station have caused problems for rail travellers in recent years. Now with 200 extra spaces everyone should be able to find a parking space, and the special off-peak rates should appeal to shoppers and weekend travellers.”

Jo Kaye, route director for Network Rail who built the car park, said: “Providing car parking at railway stations is all about true transport integration – passengers driving short distances to the station to then use the railway they rely on for the longer part of their journey”.
