Historic Carlisle station transformed in a makeover that is an inspiration for the future

The historic Carlisle Citadel station is getting a new look this week as part of a campaign from national DIY retailer Homebase to transform spaces across the UK.

The station, designed in gothic style by Sir William Tite to complement the nearby stone towers of the Citadel in the heart of Carlisle, was opened in 1847 for the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway and the Caledonian Railway. Every year around 1.7 million passengers board or leave trains at the station.

It was identified last year by Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, as one of three stations most in need of improvement on the West Coast Main Line, the others being Preston and Crewe. He called for train operators to be given more freedom to invest in stations.

Virgin Trains, the company that manages these stations, would like to introduce permanent improvements and believes the next franchise for West Coast, due to start in 2012, should offer opportunities for positive investment. The Homebase project has confirmed Virgin’s belief that Carlisle Citadel station has the potential to be a truly attractive and welcoming gateway to the great Border City of Carlisle.

Ann Turner, Station Manager at Carlisle for Virgin Trains, said: “We’re very proud of our station, which looks amazing. The station is full of history and we love it. What has happened has really transformed it and shows what can be done.”

She added: “Response from the local community has been great. We’ve noticed passengers arriving a little bit earlier to allow extra time to enjoy the station and take it all in.”

This week’s impressive transformation, including turning the waiting room into a lounge, creating a garden on one platform, painting the connecting bridge and even installing a kitchen among other developments, has been warmly welcomed by local people. The process will be filmed for a national advertising campaign for Homebase to appear in the spring and summer starring local Carlisle people as extras.

The aim of the Homebase activity is to inspire and encourage people to transform their own homes and gardens. Upon completion this Saturday (20 February), passengers will be able to experience the new-look station for themselves, taking a seat on a sofa, picnicking on garden furniture or stopping to admire the foliage.

The advertising featuring Carlisle station and some of the city’s locals will be on TV from March.

Rail travel to London for Carlisle United FC fans attending Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final

Advance rail ticket bookings have already proved so popular for fans travelling to London for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final between Carlisle United and Southampton at Wembley on 28 March that there is now limited availability of seat reservations.

Virgin Trains recommends that Blues fans intending to travel by rail should reserve seats as soon as possible if they have not already done so as trains will be very busy.

Route improvement work between Carlisle and Preston on the West Coast Main Line between 12:00 on Saturday 27 March and 15:00 on Sunday 28 March means that fans are recommended to leave Carlisle on Friday or Saturday 26/27 March.

None of the scheduled trains from Carlisle to London Euston on Sunday 28 March will be able to reach London in time for the kick-off. The last through train on Saturday 27 March is the 11:49 from Carlisle, as later departures will involve either road coaches or a diverted train to Preston, joining normal trains there.

The usual route is due to reopen on Sunday 28 March in time for returning fans, who should make reservations to be sure of getting on their chosen train. Virgin Trains for Carlisle leave London Euston at 25 minutes past each hour that afternoon and evening, up to the last departure from London at 19:25 hours.

Seat reservations are free of charge. Travel tickets can be bought and seats reserved at the same time on line at http://www.virgintrains.com/ , by phone on 08457 222 333 or in person at Carlisle Citadel station. Demand has already proved very heavy.

West Coast mainline capacity will be exhausted long before High Speed 2 is built says Virgin Trains

The House of Commons Transport Committee report ‘Priorities for investment in the railways’ today draws attention to the need to maintain investment in ‘classic lines’ while High Speed 2 is being built.

Tony Collins, Chief Executive of Virgin Trains, who gave evidence to the Committee said:

‘The Committee has issued a clear warning that excitement surrounding the development of High Speed rail shouldn’t lead us to neglect the ‘classic’ lines which are essential to our economic health. The West Coast mainline will be full before the end of the decade if we take an investment holiday while building High Speed 2. After all the improvements we’ve made we don’t want to see passengers lose faith in rail through years of overcrowding.’

Virgin Trains introduced its Virgin High Frequency timetable in December 2008, slashing journey times and increasing capacity by 30%. Outstanding growth since then has seen 15% growth in passengers.

The trains take the strain again... Virgin Trains and lastminute.com trial free pampering sessions on board

This week saw passengers on Virgin Trains able to relax and enjoy their journey even more with the option of free luxury hand massages on board. In partnership with lastminute.com teams of qualified beauty specialists walked the aisles on selected London to Manchester and Manchester to London trains offering those travelling a treat.

To further emphasise to passengers that travelling by train is a far easier and less stressful mode of transport than by air or car, the free hand massages lasted 2-3 minutes apiece with no pushy sales environment. The UK’s leading online travel and leisure retailer lastminute.com also used the opportunity to promote its spa break packages and distribute leaflets and money-off vouchers to lucky passengers. However the main objective of the partnership was to create a relaxing and hassle free on-board experience.

Says Jim Rowe, Senior Communications Manager, “We trialled this luxury treatment free of charge for customers and we hope it improved their overall experience of travelling by train. Quicker journey times, no traffic, free Wifi and now beauty treatments on board – what better way to make a journey! Over 100 people benefitted from the service and we will now review whether to introduce this across our network as a permanent offer.”

Passengers love Virgin trains and staff but want better stations

Virgin Trains passengers have given a big thumbs up to the trains, staff and value for money for price of ticket, but they have made clear they desperately want to see the same standards at stations. These details are contained in the latest National Passenger Survey from rail watchdog Passenger Focus, published today.

Virgin Trains has been rated top of long-distance rail franchisees on 'value for money for the price of your ticket' and joint top on 'overall satisfaction'. Virgin has been rated first or second on almost all aspects relating to trains – such as 'provision of information during the journey' and 'comfort of seating area', and first or second on around half of aspects relating to stations – such as 'connections with other public transport'.

Eighty nine percent of passengers are satisfied with their overall experience with Virgin Trains, compared to 84% a year earlier. Sixty four percent of passengers are satisfied with the value for money tickets for Virgin Trains represent, up from 56% a year earlier and higher than any other operator. Virgin Trains staff also received some of the highest scores for helpfulness.

But the gap between the standards on trains and those at stations has widened. Scores for stations used by Virgin Trains' passengers are below average in several areas affected by the condition of the stations. The results prompted a repeat of earlier calls by Virgin Trains to be allowed to take greater control of long-neglected stations, and bring them up to the levels of trains. Virgin Trains has day-to-day responsibility for managing 17 of the 43 stations it serves, but currently relies on Network Rail for major improvements. Virgin Trains believes that, as operator, it should take on this role.

Virgin Trains Chief Executive Tony Collins said: "The thumbs up for our trains and staff is great news, but I share our passengers' frustration at the state of our stations and facilities. I know from personal contact with our station staff that they would also like to see better station facilities and I am confident that with the right investment at stations they will deliver an even better service for our customers.

"That's why we support the plan of Transport Secretary Lord Adonis to improve the quality and facilities at stations up to 21st Century standards. We have long argued that longer franchises and allowing train operators to invest in stations, would act as the catalyst to station improvements, which in turn could drive wider regional regeneration. It is encouraging that Lord Adonis shares this vision and is prepared to find ways of making it happen."

One key driver of the satisfaction results is the Virgin High Frequency timetable, introduced in December 2008. This saw journey times reduced, and an increase of over 30% in train services has seen frequency of trains score 86% (up from 81% in autumn 2008). Speed of trains has received a record score of 93% (up from 82% a year ago); with a massive improvement in train punctuality and reliability, to 90% against an 82% score in the previous autumn survey. The London to Manchester and London to Birmingham routes now have a train every 20 minutes, which has been described by Brendan Fox Editor of the Thomas Cook European Timetable as the "most frequent inter city timetable in Europe".

An example of the benefits of greater operator involvement is the surge in satisfaction scores for car parking at Virgin Trains stations. This follows an investment of over £90 million increasing the number of car parking spaces at stations, with almost 3000 extra spaces already delivered. The investment with Network Rail has seen passenger satisfaction on facilities for car parking score 56 percent – an increase of 13 percent since the autumn 2008 survey.

The country’s HOT spots revealed…Virgin Trains reveals where the UK will be spending Valentine’s Day

Romantic weekends away are top of the present list for the nation this upcoming Valentine’s Day. With locations such as the Lake District and London amongst the most popular destinations for Virgin Trains passengers, tickets are selling fast.

New figures released by the leading West Coast rail provider, Virgin Trains, are shedding light on this years ‘hot’ spots and it appears people are planning on boarding the train in their hordes to enjoy a spot of romance with 11,000 passengers already scheduled to step aboard on Sunday 14 February. Also enticing travellers with their metropolitan offerings are Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester.

Top locations for Valentine’s Day on the Virgin Trains network this year are:
• Manchester
• Edinburgh
• London
• Lake District
• Glasgow.

Says Jim Rowe, Senior Communications Manager at Virgin Trains: “With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year we are delighted people are utilising this and embarking on long weekends away with their loved ones. With the trend for stay-cations still very strong, it is great to see people taking advantage of the beautiful locations on our doorstep, especially as they are now so easy to reach courtesy of frequent trains, shorter journey times and advance ticket fares.”

For the parents out there the next milestone on the agenda will be half-term and this too looks to be a busy time on the trains with Manchester, Glasgow and London amongst the top destinations. In fact Virgin Trains has already seen nearly 100,000 tickets sold for the upcoming February holiday. Jim Rowe continues: “As a parent myself I would advise anyone looking to go away for half-term to book as early as possible. I remember many school breaks feeling very long due to the challenges of having to entertain the children, and make our home seem like a fun and exciting place, when we would all rather be somewhere different for a week!”

Whether travelling with babies or older children Virgin Trains has an offering for everyone including the award winning VKidz bags and there is something to keep all the family entertained.

Sorry Mum.......

To all the mothers out there if you have daughters you are the lucky ones, as it seems they are more likely to spend the special day with the mums (a third of daughters voted yes). Only a quarter of sons admit to the same. So it looks like there are going to be some unhappy mums around the country on March 14th!

By region the top five going cities with the most respondents saying they will be going home this year are:
 Chester (50%)
 Stoke (50%)
 Wolverhampton (43%)
 Lancaster (40%)
 Northampton (40%)
And the cities making up the bottom half of the table, with the most respondents unable to make it home this mothers day are:
 Stafford (75%)
 Southampton (71%)
 Leeds (71%)
 Coventry (70%)
 Sheffield (67%)

Women in fact seem to make more journeys home generally, in fact 43% admit to making more than 15 journeys per year with men making between one and three trips back to their family each year. Virgin Trains the leading West Coast rail provider who commissioned the research has also revealed that men seemed to need a reason to go home, be it a birthday, Christmas or mothers or fathers day whereas women are happy just to pop home for no particular reason.

Whether needing to get their washing done or just wanting some home cooking 16-24 year olds are some of the most likely to go home, albeit under the alias of going home for mothers/fathers day! The age range up (25-34) need no occasion and just wanted to see the folks, you’d hope by this age it won’t be because of their washing!

Says Jim Rowe, Senior Communication’s manager at Virgin Trains: “As a parent myself I appreciate when the children come home, and am pleased to see that a third of people will be making the effort this year. There is still time for this figure to rise, with frequent journey times and advance ticket rates available allowing people to travel across the country with ease.”
