Experience the romance of the railways past and present

Train passengers are able enjoy the contrasts of modern 125-mph tilting trains and vintage steam locomotives on the busy West Coast Main Line this summer.

For the first time in over 40 years Statesman Rail is operating a regular timetabled steam-hauled train, departing from stations in Lancashire and offering a unique 260 mile return day trip over the world famous Settle and Carlisle line. Virgin Trains’ iconic Pendolino and Super Voyager tilting trains will provide connections into the steam-hauled special train at both Lancaster and Preston.

Passengers are able to see how effortlessly modern trains tackle gradients on the route, while the steam-hauled train will demonstrate how demanding it was for the driver and fireman to keep their train moving.

The steam-hauled train, will travel from Lancaster and Preston to Appleby and Carlisle via the scenic Settle and Carlisle railway, and operates every Wednesday from 29 July to 9 September. Due to demand an additional train on Wednesday 23 September has been added to the timetable.

Virgin’s Pendolino trains are fully air-conditioned and have power points to enable passengers to charge mobile phones and laptops. Most trains are Wi-Fi enabled and have enhanced mobile phone reception. Alternatively, if you’d prefer some quiet time there is a quiet coach on all trains. The Pendolino trains are used on most services on the London-Glasgow route.

The Super Voyager diesel trains are also fully air-conditioned, have power points for charging mobile phones, laptops and personal entertainment systems, as well as a quiet coach on all trains. The Super Voyager trains are used on the Birmingham-Glasgow/Edinburgh route and some London-Lancaster trains.

Connections from Virgin’s Pendolino or Super Voyager trains will be available at Preston (from Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Crewe or Warrington Bank Quay) or at Lancaster (from Glasgow Central and Carlisle). Why not take a short break, and include a steam train ride as part of your itinerary? For details of Lake District accommodation contact Cumbria Tourism on 01539 822222 or visit http://www.golakes.co.uk/.
.
Virgin Trains offers advance fares, which could be as little as £4.50 single between Birmingham and Preston, offering affordable connections into the special steam train. For full details of fares and availability visit http://www.virgintrains.com/. Fares on the steam special from Lancaster start at £56.05 Standard; £84.55 First Class and £132.05 for Premier Dining.

Virgin Trains Communications Manager Steven Knight said: “The romance of the railways has never gone away. This is a great opportunity to take a peek back into the railways of yesteryear while enjoying the railways of the 21st Century. There is something just as romantic with the sleek lines of a Virgin Pendolino as it whizzes through the countryside at 125mph as there is with the smoke trails left by a steam locomotive.”

The Fellsman steam train will leave from Lancaster and then pick up passengers at Preston, Bamber Bridge, Blackburn and Clitheroe and will be hauled throughout by steam giants from the past including the recently rebuilt LMS Royal Scot class 46115 ‘Scots Guardsman’ or LMS Jubilee class 5690 ‘Leander’.

Seated in carriages from the 195’s & 1960s, passengers will be able to hear and feel the engines working hard to pull the heavy train up the steep gradients of the spectacular Settle and Carlisle line and over the impressive 24-arch viaduct at Ribblehead. Passing through unsurpassed vistas of the three peaks, then on to the summit of the line at Ais Gill and on through the stunning Yorkshire Dales.

Passengers have the opportunity to leave the train at the pretty Westmorland market town of Appleby for a four-hour break, or, carry on through the pretty Eden Valley to the border city of Carlisle for a two-hour break while the engine takes on coal and is serviced ready for the return journey. There will be a chance for photographs as the engine stops for water and perhaps have a chat to the driver and fireman who will explain the workings of the engine and show children the roaring coal fire.

“The Fellsman” is aimed primarily at the family market (with prices to match) and is an unashamedly nostalgic glimpse back to the glory days of Britain’s heritage with the opportunity to spend a unique and memorable day out away from motorway traffic jams and the hustle and bustle of modern daily life.

Reserved seating is available in Standard or First Class with a buffet car open throughout the journey for beverages and light refreshments. For anyone wishing to live it up a little there is the opportunity to enjoy a freshly cooked full English breakfast and three course dinner in the opulence of Premier class. Freshly prepared on board by chefs in the kitchen car and silver served by liveried stewards, this is certainly the way to travel while enjoying the spectacular passing scenery.

Reservations may be made through ‘Statesman Rail’ on 0845 310 2458 and all website bookings http://www.statesmanrail.com/ will benefit from a 5% discount over the normal fares. There is also a family of 4 ticket available for any combination of adults and children offering even further savings.

Tickets for connecting Virgin services can be booked online at http://www.virgintrains.com/ or bought at local stations.

Operations Director Peter Watkinson says “We are pleased to introduce this very special train, with prices starting at an equivalent of just 17p per mile. Young and old alike can enjoy a travel experience they thought had vanished forever with a steam-hauled journey over what is regarded by many as one of the great railway journeys in the world – the famous Settle to Carlisle line. “

More car parking spaces at Wolverhampton station from 10 August

The first phase of an expanded car park at Wolverhampton station will open on Monday 10 August. The car park will provide an additional 77 parking spaces, making a total of 477 spaces available at the West Midlands station. For the safety and security of users, the car park also has CCTV throughout with 24 hour recording.

A new charging structure is also being introduced, offering substantial discounts over the full day rate for off peak and weekend users.

From 10 August all-day parking at Wolverhampton will cost £8, and is the first increase in parking charges at the station for nearly five years. New reduced off-peak parking charges will be available from 10:00 on weekdays and weekends at £4 a day. Monthly, quarterly, six monthly and annual season tickets are also available for regular peak time users, which have also been increased to align them pro-rata with the new daily rate. The new monthly ticket costs £98 effectively offering daily parking, based on 20 days use a month at just £4.90 a day. The annual ticket is prices at £980 and if used for just 45 weeks a year offers an equivalent daily parking rate of just £4.36 a day.

Virgin Trains Station Manager at Wolverhampton Jo Jebb said: “The limited parking facilities at Wolverhampton station have caused problems for rail travellers in recent years. Now with 77 extra spaces everyone should be able to find a parking space, and the special off-peak rates should appeal to shoppers and weekend travellers.”

The car park has a new ‘Pay on Foot’ payment system, where a ticket is issued on entry to the car park. Payment must then be made at the machine prior to customers returning to their car to leave the car park.

The work at Wolverhampton is part of a joint project between Virgin Trains and Network Rail to improve car parking at all 17 stations on the West Coast route which are managed by Virgin Trains. The other stations involved are: Lancaster, Penrith, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western, Carlisle, Oxenholme, Runcorn, Crewe, Stockport, Macclesfield, Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Coventry, Birmingham International, Preston and Rugby.

David Golding, Network Rail's Route Enhancements Manager said: "More passengers are travelling by train than ever before and the demand for rail travel is set to continue to rise. We predict that a large proportion of these extra passengers will drive to the station, putting even more strain on the car park.”

22 July 2009

Passengers are to be offered thousands of extra seats over the next few weeks on the busy Virgin Trains route between the West Midlands and Scotland through Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Longer trains with more coaches will run between Birmingham and Edinburgh six days a week from Saturday 25 July to Saturday 5 September. More will follow on Fridays from 14 August on Birmingham services to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

On some other trains on Fridays only from 14 August an extra Super Voyager will be coupled on to make a combined train of eight or nine cars, offering between 412 and 452 seats.

“Demand for travel is always high in July and August, especially for Festival visitors to Edinburgh. We are offering more seats this summer because our trains are even busier than ever, with more people attracted by our improved timetable,” said Karen Hattie, the General Manager of Virgin Trains in Scotland and Cumbria.

The Summer Booking boom

15 July 2009

As the summer holiday season approaches Virgin Trains, the leading West Coast rail provider, has seen a staggering 32% increase in bookings on the same period last year. With journeys to Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow contributing to the increase of 256,000 bookings, these figures undoubtedly confirm ‘staycations’ are the trend for 2009.

Combining designer shopping and historic architecture Chester has become a new favourite seeing a 300% increase in bookings. However, interestingly the picturesque Lake District is less popular this year with bookings to Oxenholme down a quarter. It appears passengers are opting for more cosmopolitan city breaks such as a weekend in the capital, where between May and June this year bookings reached nearly 180,000.

Starting from this weekend, in time for the summer holidays, families will be able to upgrade to First Class on Saturdays and Sundays from £5 per child and £15 per adult for a single journey. Providing access to free Wi-Fi, bigger seats, more legroom and complimentary refreshments including the new ‘Best of British’ breakfast or brunch, meaning passengers can sit back and relax.

Says Jim Rowe Senior Communications Manager at Virgin Trains: “With the children’s summer holiday fast approaching it can be a difficult task choosing a destination that will appeal to all the family. However with the varied mix of city vs. country so readily available families are spoilt for choice.”

Rowe continues “As the UK increases in popularity we are pleased that travellers are taking advantage of our faster and more frequent services and with people looking for greener methods of travel more are opting for the train. We are endeavoring to make the journey fun for all the family and with the introduction of an increased children’s offering and the new First Class catering, the train journey should signal the start of the holiday not just the journey.“

Some of the top destinations so far this year include:
London with 90,607 bookings
Greater Manchester with 35,258 bookings
Glasgow Central with 18,621 bookings
North Wales with 4,155 bookings
Chester with 3,469 bookings

To book tickets go to http://www.virgintrains.com/ or telephone 08457 222 33.

Rail passengers get new First Class facility at Crewe

10 July 2009

Rail passengers holding First Class tickets can now relax in a spacious dedicated lounge at Crewe station.

The unveiling today, (Friday 10 July) by Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson of the new lounge facility for First Class passengers has boosted Crewe railway station’s role and reputation as a key gateway to Cheshire and the Northwest.

The Cheshire Lounge project is the result of a unique partnership between Virgin Trains, Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), Cheshire & Warrington Economic Alliance (CWEA), local tourism board Visit Chester & Cheshire and Cheshire East Council.

The Crewe facility opened this week and offers complimentary refreshments and newspapers, and will be fully Wi-Fi enabled. Located on the station over bridge at the top of the steps to Platform 5, it is accessible to all First Class passengers traveling from, to, or through the station.

The lounge, which will be maintained and operated by Virgin Trains, will enhance the Cheshire welcome and provide a key visitor information point designed to promote Cheshire and Warrington’s business tourism offer, as well as the sub region’s extensive choice of visitor attractions, events and facilities.

“The Cheshire Lounge will be a real asset for Cheshire and Warrington, and the region as a whole,” said CWEA Chief Executive, Martin Lee.

“Crewe is an increasingly busy station at the hub of the national network, used by almost 2.9 million passengers a year. It’s around an hour-and-a-half from London and is served by frequent trains from all points of the compass. The Cheshire Lounge is a welcome enhancement of the station’s facilities,” said Sam Dixon, Station Manager for Virgin Trains at Crewe.

The lounge also represents a first class result for a group of South Cheshire College students whose work is to be displayed in the lounge following a photographic competition organised by CWEA and Virgin Trains.

The winning entries from James Richards of Nantwich and Ashley Sanderson, Madeley in Crewe were selected by judges representing all the Cheshire Business Lounge partners, and reflect Cheshire people at work and at play.

The successful students were rewarded with a taste of luxury, courtesy of Virgin Trains in the appropriate surroundings of a First Class carriage.

“The students’ winning entries will be featured amongst a wide selection of iconic images of Chester-Cheshire, underlining why the area has become such a ‘must see’ destination for an increasing number of visitors,” added Chris Brown of Visit Chester & Cheshire.

Glasgow gets the First Class taste of Great British Breakfast as weekend trial offer is extended

02 July 2009

The trial of a Great British Breakfast bargain on selected Virgin Trains at weekends has proved so popular it is to be extended.

Glasgow passengers will also be able to enjoy a full complimentary cooked breakfast on Saturdays and the experiment to test demand will continue on routes between London Euston and Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Preston and Manchester.

The original trial on 16 trains each weekend during June is extended to weekends up to Sunday 26 July, but involving 17 trains from Saturday 4 July. The extra train on Saturdays will be the 0940 from Glasgow Central, with catering from there, Carlisle and Oxenholme. Catering service in 1st Class on the 1030 London Euston to Glasgow Central on Saturdays will also apply north of Preston, having previously been south of Warrington only.

Complimentary breakfast will be available at-seat in First Class on the chosen trains, with a brunch option later in the morning and early afternoon on some trains.

A Weekend First upgrade costs an extra flat-rate £15 per single journey on Virgin Trains for holders of most Standard Class tickets, but people travelling with Standard Anytime tickets can upgrade without making any extra payment. At-seat food service is complimentary in First Class on the trains involved in the trial until 26 July. The original catering trial with 16 trains each weekend began on 6 June and was originally due to run until 28 June.

The Virgin Trains promotional theme of ‘Weekends are back!’ is emphasised by the opening of First Class Lounges on stations at weekends for the first time, also to test the leisure market for facilities that are already enjoyed Mondays to Fridays when business people are travelling.
Wii-fi is also available free in First Class on Virgin Pendolino trains and First Class Lounges at weekends on the same basis as weekdays, so those who trade up can also save at least £5 compared to the hourly charge in Standard Class.

“The offer of complimentary food, served at your seat as a trial to test the market, is being extended to encourage even more people to trade up to First Class at weekends. They will also enjoy the benefits of unlimited free wi-fi access, which is charged at an hourly rate in Standard,” said Bob Powell, On Board Director for Virgin Trains.

“Customers in First Class already enjoy our unique at-seat service of complimentary ‘Best of British’ food between Mondays and Fridays, something no other train operator provides within Britain. Now this is available on selected trains at weekends too when leisure travellers can enjoy the experience,” Mr Powell added.

The Great British Breakfast offers outdoor-reared British pork and herb sausage, sweetcure back bacon, free-range fried egg, potato rosti and grilled tomato (or there is an equivalent vegetarian grill). Alternatively, customers can have a roll with bacon or sausage or vegetarian sausage, or a fruit plate. The main course is accompanied by toast and marmalade, orange or grapefruit juice, water and tea or coffee.

Later, brunch is offered. This is the breakfast menu but with the option of a “light bite” snack as an alternative.

The usual weekend offering of tea, coffee and biscuits will continue to be available at other times.

The trial will be available on these trains:

Saturdays to 25 July.
0748 LIVERPOOL LIME ST - LONDON EUSTON, 0755 MANCHESTER PICCADILLY - EUSTON, 0800 EUSTON - MANCHESTER, 0806 WOLVERHAMPTON - EUSTON, 0940 GLASGOW CENTRAL TO LONDON EUSTON (for passengers joining at Glasgow, Carlisle and Oxenholme The Lake District), 1023 EUSTON - WOLVERHAMPTON, 1030 EUSTON - GLASGOW CENTRAL (food offer extended north of Preston, including passengers joining at Lancaster, Oxenholme and Carlisle; previously only south of Warrington), 1035 MANCHESTER - EUSTON, 1040 EUSTON - MANCHESTER.

Charter train potential for Virgin Trains’ ‘new-look’ loco-hauled trainset

01 July 2009

The ‘new look’ for Virgin Trains’ Mk III loco-hauled trainset was unveiled at Wabtec Rail’s Doncaster Works today. The first refurbished coach, from the nine-coach train, was showcased to journalists and special train operators as Virgin Trains announced that it is also making the train available for private charter operations.

The loco-hauled train is being retained by Virgin Trains as a strategic spare, which provides an insurance policy against any major damage being sustained by a Pendolino or Super Voyager train. Additionally, the set will be used on a Fridays-only service from London to Preston at 18:46, providing relief to the extremely busy 18:30 Glasgow and 18:33 Liverpool departures.

The refresh of the trainset, which is leased by Virgin Trains from Porterbrook, is being carried out by Wabtec Rail at its works in Doncaster.

The work at Wabtec has involved gutting the vehicles, to enable new carpets, lino, and re-upholstered seating to be fitted. Improvements to safety have been made with the replacement of the internal doors. To align the customer experience to that of the Pendolino and Super Voyager trains, at-seat power points are also being installed at most seats and WiFi will also be provided. All of the glazing is being upgraded to the current standards with laminated glass being fitted. The air-conditioning equipment will also be replaced by a re-engineered module developed by Wabtec to give improved reliability..

Externally, the coaches will be finished in the current Virgin Trains silver livery and new LED-style Central Door Locking indicators will be fitted. All the running gear is also being overhauled by Wabtec..

The nine-coach train will comprise three First Class vehicles, with seating for 143; a catering vehicle, with 18 First Class seats; and five Standard vehicles with seating for 374.

The work is due to be completed at Doncaster by the 21st of July. A Class 90 electric locomotive or Class 57 diesel locomotive power will be available and the coaches will be based at Wembley depot in north London, where they will be maintained by Alstom.

Virgin Trains Chief Operating Officer Chris Gibb said: “If one of our trains is damaged and we know that repairs may take several weeks, we will be able to use the Mk III set to cover on a planned basis, so it’s our insurance policy against the unexpected happening. In the past we would have looked to hire a train from another operator, but that option no longer exists with all 110mph/125mph trains fully committed. Like any insurance policy we hope we don’t need to call on it, but it’s reassuring to know it’s there should we need it.

“We will also use the set on a regular basis to assist with heavy loadings on a Friday evening out of London.”

The Mk III set also provides Virgin Trains with the rolling stock resource to pro-actively react to known increased demand on its routes. “We will hire it out for charter work, and we may do charter work ourselves; we are considering using it to operate football and other sporting event specials for example,” said Chris Gibb.

The set will be available for hire for special trains on Virgin Trains’ routes with Virgin Trains crew and a Class 90 or Class 57 locomotive, or by charter train operators and other train operating companies with their own crews on Virgin Trains’ routes, or other routes with Class 57 or other suitable locomotives.

Notes to Editors

Virgin Trains initially explored the options of using Class 180 ‘Adelante’, trains for our strategic standby, but subsequently had a chance to continue to lease the Porterbrook owned Mk III set, which was originally committed to National Express East Coast. This is the set now at Wabtec’s Doncaster works having an overhaul. In the interim, Virgin Trains hired a DBS / Cargo D set.

In the event that a Super Voyager or Pendolino is out of traffic for a lengthy period, we will use the Mk III set on the Euston – Birmingham route on a daily basis, on services selected so it can keep time. If this happens we’ll train up more catering staff to do this, so we can maintain our advertised product. The Friday working would then be covered by a few hours of Super Voyager or Pendolino extra availability.

The vehicles being overhauled for WB64 set are:
DVT: 82126 (82101 spare).
FOs: 11007/18/48.
RFM: 10212/17 (includes spare).
TSOs: 12011/78, 12133/38.
TSOD: 12122
